STAFF HIGHLIGHT ED GERRITY
Hi everyone! For those who don’t know me, my name is Ed Gerrity and I’m the Director of Music at St. Tom’s. I grew up in Buffalo, NY, the middle of 5 siblings, and first moved to Ohio in 2005. I studied Music Education/Jazz Studies at The Ohio State University from ‘05-06 before transferring to the University at Buffalo, graduating with my BA in Philosophy with a Music minor in 2009. Right out of college I returned to Ohio, taking a job as Music Director at a Catholic church in Bellevue, OH. Shortly afterwards I met my wife, Jessica, and we relocated to the Toledo area. We have four children, Madelyn (8), Abigail (6), Jackson (3), and baby Isla (8 months) who keep me busy constantly when I am not at St. Tom’s.
In the past, I have played in multiple jazz and rock bands, so I love to play all kinds of music on the piano. I find myself listening to more contemporary praise music since joining St. Tom’s and taking part in our Nights of Worship. I also enjoy traveling all over the place (including too many trips to Disney World with our munchkins), and always look forward to finding new travel destinations to explore. I consider myself a huge sports fan and try to teach my kids about any games they will let me watch.
My journey to St. Tom’s was an adventure. I was previously working at St. Joseph Church in Sylvania for the past 8 years as an assistant music director when St. Tom’s first came on my radar. I found myself in an unprecedented break from playing for church due to Covid-19 shutting down in-person Masses when Fr. Charlie Ritter contacted me about playing for St. Tom’s. After visiting BG and spending the afternoon chatting with Fr. Ritter and Sophia, I was excited at the prospect of joining such a vibrant and exciting parish. We made plans for me to play for Masses a couple of weeks into the future (when in-person Masses would resume) but upon returning home that afternoon, it was announced that classes (and Masses) would be canceled indefinitely. Despite my disappointment, God decided to bring me back into the fold to play for St. Tom’s streaming Easter Sunday service, and I was hopeful to be back sooner than later. I was able to meet with Fr. Jeff over the summer and knew that the move was a perfect fit for my family and I. God’s timing has blessed me with a wonderful new parish that I grow to love more and more every week.
My favorite part of St. Tom’s so far is getting to talk and work with so many talented, excited students. I’m constantly impressed by the abilities of the students and how generous they are with their time and talent. I also love seeing how prayerful and holy the students are, early mornings and late nights, attending Mass and Eucharistic Adoration, and singing their hearts out at Nights of Worship. Getting to work with such a young and vibrant parish is a privilege and I am excited for what the future holds at St. Tom’s. I look forward to meeting many more of you and continuing to settle in at my new parish home!
